POSITION SUMMARY
Working within Lalme’ Iwesawtexw (Seabird Island Community School) you will provide counselling and support for K-12 students. Essentially, your responsibility is to equip students with a variety of strategies for coping with life’s challenges: Included but not limited to; Helping students establish and achieve their personal goals, Motivating and inspiring children through creative play and intervention, Helping students identify and manage various challenges such as anxiety, grief, and anger using a trauma-informed approach, Establishing individual intervention plans for students on a one-on-one basis, Assisting students and staff in crisis situations.
You will be a key support to help students establish their personal goals, guiding and helping children make action plans, motivate and inspire children, identifying and providing resources, referrals and follow-ups and providing assistance in crisis situations. You will be a member of an interdisciplinary, collaborative teaching team, liaising with other professionals, students, family members, and community to provide students with holistic, culturally focused education. We are a Group One K-12 Independent school located 1 kilometer from Agassiz, BC on the beautiful Fraser River, 120 km east of Vancouver. We have an expected student enrollment of 226 students housed in the main school (K-8) and in the adjacent high school.

WHAT YOU BRING
Master's degree or bachelor's degree in social work (with a completed counselling practicum), Psychology or Child and Youth Care, or equivalent is required.
Knowledge and experience in a variety of theoretical orientations, such as CBT, mindfulness, and client-centered approaches.
Experience counseling children and youth from diverse backgrounds, including cross-cultural sensitivity.
BC Association of Clinical Counselors membership considered an asset.
Prior experience working with young male students in a school setting.
Ability to balance competing priorities and to work under pressure.
Flexibility and creativity.
Effective Interpersonal Skills focused on: conflict resolution, maintaining confidentiality, active listening skills, maintaining commitments, setting emotional boundaries, and remains un-biased.
Solid knowledge of and demonstrated ability in addressing a wide range of academic, social, emotional and behavioral needs of children of intermediate ages.
Ability to adhere to Oath of Confidentiality and Seabird Island Band Policies and Procedure.
Knowledge and respect of Stó: lo culture, traditions and language is considered an asset.
Experience working with First Nations children and the community is considered an asset.
Valid BC Driver’s License, Class 5.
