Position Title: Chief Operating Engineer Department: Steam Plant / Energy / Fire
Employee: Location: White River, Ontario
PRIMARY FOCUS
Ensure efficient and effective operation of the kilns, steam plant and related auxiliaries including air compressors, water supply, heating and air conditioning systems, electric power, and fire protection systems in a manner consistent with TSSA and ESA regulations, while complying with WRFP principles and guidelines.
ACCOUNTABILITIES

- Ensure employees are trained, developed, and perform to standards required for efficient operations and that equipment is maintained in good working condition.
- Ensure all employees are provided with, and contribute to, a safe and healthy work environment. Report all incidents, near misses, and equipment damage to H&S.
- Ensure the steam plant is satisfying the steam demands of the sawmill in relation to heating and Kiln operation.
- Ensure the operation of the air compressors which will include scheduled service maintenance, operating hours per compressor, a daily and weekly check list. Monitor and maintain the heating and AC unit throughout the sawmill and office areas. Ensure the Fire system is always in full operational capability.
- Ensure continuous and adequate energy supply to the kilns and optimizes kiln services and schedules.
- Audit daily log sheets and take appropriate actions to ensure the equipment and departments are operated within the requirements of the Operating Engineers Act as well as the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Act. Sets standards of performance for department and ensures employees work in a diligent and safe manner to achieve the targets budgets and KPIs.
- Submit daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly reports summarizing performance of the department against targets, budgets and KPIs. Prepares departmental budget.
- Optimize fuel mix seasonally and modify as required to maintain proper steam flow to the kilns. Maximize the use of bark and minimize the use of sawdust and shavings to minimize cost of energy production.
- Monitor and record the mill water consumption on a weekly and monthly report (monthly consumption (meter reading)). Investigate ways to reduce water consumption.
- Monitor water treatment results and make recommendations to ensure they are within range.
- Monitor the performance of the three operating kilns to minimize the hrs required per lumber charge while ensuring full recovery of the condensate to the steam plant.
- Comply with all required inspections. Maintain a close working relationship with TSSA.
- Plan and coordinate maintenance and shutdowns of equipment to minimize mill disruptions.
- Organize repairs for kilns & provide oversight to ensure work is completed properly and ontime.
- Order all critical spares, all operating chemicals, and kiln supplies.
