BBL is seeking an experienced Health, Safety & Environment Manager. As an integral member of BBL’s Leadership Team, the Health, Safety & Environment Manager will report into the General Manager and is responsible for the overall safety leadership of our sawmill manufacturing facility and oil transloading service company, based in Nampa, AB. The incumbent will work proactively to anticipate, develop, lead, manage and steward all aspects of the health, safety and environment function in a fast paced industrial setting. The ideal candidate is one who is passionate about continuous improvement, excels in safety leadership, takes decisive action and has superior team building and interpersonal skills.
Key Responsibilities:
- Partnering with the leadership team to facilitate the definition of an industry leading safety culture for BBL and outline the path required for safety continuous improvement;
- Facilitating and participating in the development and implementation of organizational and departmental HS&E plans, goals and metrics;
- Leading by demonstrating the required behaviours, attitudes and mindset to achieve the established HS&E goals;
- Developing the HS&E performance measures and metrics, with relative value top of mind;
- Supporting leaders with communication strategies to inform and advance the adoption of the desired safety culture;
- Executing a needs analysis, designing, implementing, delivering and evaluating HS&E related training;
- Creating a pandemic response and business continuity plan;
- Conducting safety audits, coordinating the implementation of audit recommendations, and assisting in the development of corrective action plans, in consultation with project / department management;
- Performing incident investigations hazard assessments and updating safe work procedures accordingly;
- Weekly and monthly reporting on HS&E performance indicators and proposed strategies for continuous improvement;
- Guiding leaders in preparing for HS&E meetings;
- Ensuring expert knowledge of all applicable legislation, standards and guidelines; and
- Maintaining best practice knowledge of HS&E strategies, trends and technologies by developing industry working relationships and participating in exchange groups, associations and committees.
Requirements:
- Legally permitted to work in Canada;
- Superior oral and written communications skills in English;
- Three (3) years experience in a similarly complex role;
- At least one (1) year experience in the wood industry, preferably in saw mills, but total industry from logging to finishing will be considered;
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and Passport;
- Valid Standard First Aid and Level C CPR/AED certification;
- Solid skills with the MS Office suite of programs;
- Have the ability to manage multiple priorities, while maintaining a strong attention to detail; and
- Be able to take initiative and motivate team members.
Beneficial if you have:
- Post secondary accreditation in Occupational Health & Safety;
- Valid BCRSP certification,
- Previous training or experience with LEAN Management or Six Sigma methodologies;
- Previous experience with HS&E management software (DATS HSE currently being used); and
- Bilingual in French and English.
