Bassé Nuts is a proud Canadian company that sources, roasts, blends, packs and distributes nuts, seeds, dried fruits and snacks. Our products are sold globally, both under the Bassé brand as well as under private labels brands for leading retailers.
SUMMARY OF THE ROLE
The PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT AND INNOVATION SPECIALIST leads the commercialization of products, from ideation through the shelf life of the product, including bench top, first production and ongoing optimization.
The Product Development and Innovation Specialist’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
- Lead the commercialization of chosen products and innovations, from ideation through the shelf life of the product, including bench top, first production and ongoing optimization
- Develops product proposals that are in line and on budget with project goals
- Communicates with ingredient suppliers (in collaboration with
Procurement department) on the development of new ingredients
- Actively participates in plant trials with a focus on recipe creation as well as assessment of operational feasibility, with a technical understanding of equipment, methods and production capacity and documents relevant information and final recipes
- Actively participates in the first production process, ensuring that standards determined from plant trial are met
- Acts as the expert and technical reference of the developed product and collaborates with quality and operations teams to transfer technical recipe information
- Maintains documentation of key product development information that is shared with other departments for product execution.
- Accountable for all samples, including customer R&D samples and shelf life samples, ensuring they are prepared according to specs and delivered in line with established deadlines
INTER-DEPARTMENT COMMUNICATION
- Participates in weekly production and team meetings
- Collaborates with Quality, Regulatory, Procurement, Customer Service,
Marketing and Operations teams throughout the development process
- Stays on top of food trends, new ingredients and manufacturing processes to keep the company updated on what’s possible and what consumers want
PACKAGING
- Accountable for determining the ideal packaging formats, shipping cartons/trays, pallet configurations and Best Before coding areas, communicating with Production and Operations departments to ensure technical feasibility
- Completes forms related to packaging as required
OTHER
- Assists with products samples as needed
- Assists team members and supervisor with other duties as required
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
- University degree in Food Science, Nutrition or related field
- 2 or more years work experience in Research and Development roles in a food manufacturing environment; snack category preferred
TECHNICAL AND PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Microsoft office
- Excellent communication skills in English and French (written and spoken)
- Basic knowledge of food safety principles and standards (HACCP, SQF, etc.)
- Excellent ability to work both in a team or independently
- Excellent organizational skills and priority management
