Venor is proud to partner with our client, New Found Gold Corp. in the recruitment for a Director of Environment and Regulatory Affairs. New Found Gold is advancing its 100% owned 1,662km2 Queensway gold project, located on the Trans-Canada highway 15km west of Gander, Newfoundland. A 500,000m drill campaign is underway. Drilling is focused on a 9.5km corridor along the Appleton fault and a 12.4km corridor along the JBP fault. The company has made several high-grade gold discoveries along the Appleton Fault Zone including Keats, Golden Joint, and Lotto, and the recently announced Keats West and Iceberg zones. New Found Gold is aggressively drilling at Queensway North to further unlock discovery potential, while work is also underway to define additional drill targets on approximately 70km of prospective strike along the Appleton and JBP fault structures on the southern portion of the Queensway property.
New Found Gold is well funded with some $72 million Canadian of cash and marketable securities on hand as of March 2023, and a market capitalization of greater than $1 billion Canadian.
Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Director Environment and Regulatory Affairs will be a key member of the senior management team tasked with the successful development of the Queensway Project continuing through the current Exploration phase and into the Regulatory Permitting, Construction and Operations. This role will be responsible for all aspects of environmental permitting and compliance, development of environmental baseline, managing the regulatory permitting process and overseeing company ESG performance. The Director will manage a team of environmental personnel and consultants and also be the primary source of contact with regulators and key stakeholders.
The Director will oversee the ongoing exploration permitting and environmental compliance; lead the Project Environmental baseline activities; head the Project Permitting and Environmental Assessment Process; steer the relationship with regulatory agencies regarding environmental permitting approvals and compliance; guide the environmental and compliance team through project permitting, construction and into operations; set project Environmental, Sustainability and Governance direction, and develop strategic plans for project delivery, aligned with New Found Gold’s vision, strategy and priorities; implement robust systems and processes for environmental risk management; participate in project design decisions; recommend and implement environmental and permitting direction in alignment with Senior Management and Board of Directors; and ensure adoption of best practices in environmental management throughout all phases of the project. Additional duties may also be required as needed.
As the ideal candidate for this role, you will have a university degree in environmental discipline, or an equivalent mix of education and experience. You have a minimum of 20+ years of experience in environmental stewardship and all aspects of project development from permitting, through construction and into operations. You bring proven leadership in successful delivery of environmental permitting and compliance in a similar situation to New Found Gold and the ability to create a strong culture of performance with zero harm, health and safety as a priority. You have knowledge of governance, environmental and compliance practices and can successfully identify and manage project risk. You are experienced in working with external stakeholders, such as communities, local organizations, and government to support permitting and social license to build and operate. You also have experience in exploration and construction/operations in mining. A good understanding and working knowledge of the applicable legislation and regulations for Mines in Newfoundland and Labrador is preferred.
