SD Avionics is a division of Satcom Direct located in Kanata, the high-tech hub of Ottawa, Ontario. Our second largest site globally, this location manufactures avionics hardware, cabin routers, and the SD Plane Simple Antenna System.

JOB SUMMARY:
Satcom Direct (SD) is recruiting an Intermediate Technical Writer who is skilled at developing, writing, and editing documentation, both standard and customized. The Intermediate Technical Writer is responsible for developing documentation related to tactical communications and satellite communication terminal systems produced by SD. Documentation includes operation, repair and maintenance manuals, operation and installation instructions, training materials, technical proposals, and other miscellaneous documents.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty listed below. Work with the Technical Writing team to create and maintain internal and customer facing documentation, including:

Installation Manuals

Component Maintenance Manuals (CMMs) per iSpec2200

Admin Guides/Reference Manuals
-
Service Bulletins
-
Service Letters
-
Assembly Instructions
-
Test Procedures
-
Arrange meetings with and consult Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to gather and clarify information as needed, then incorporate into new documents or update existing documents

Collaborate with other writers to effectively manage the technical publications workload, ensuring quality expectations are exceeded and deadlines are met

Edit and update single source documentation for output to several formats

Edit assembly and part drawings to create appropriate illustrations for instructions

Implement documentation new releases and updates by creating Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), managing the ECO process as required, and obtaining approvals

Write clear and consistent content; perform technical editing as part of the Technical Writing team review process

Develop, maintain, update, and use templates for all documents

Apply customer and SME feedback to improve the usability of documentation

Provide constructive feedback if/when areas of improvement are identified to enhance technical publications processes and the documentation produced

Work with the Quality Management team to review and edit documents created by other departments

Prepare, review, and maintain all forms of documentation in compliance with SD standards
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to meet the minimum qualifications established for education, knowledge, and skills. The requirements listed below are representative of the skills and traits required for the position.
Required:

Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 3 years relevant experience or a Graduate degree and a minimum of 2 years relevant experience

3+ years prior technical documentation/writing experience required, including a demonstrable understanding of technical writing principles and best practices for developing usable, high-quality technical documentation

Excellent teamwork and communication skills, including ability and willingness to consult with subject matter experts from engineering, support, and product management

Proficiency in MS Office suite, including Word, Excel, and Visio
-
Proficiency in Adobe FrameMaker and MadCap Flare
-
Strong organization and time management skills that can be leveraged to manage documentation projects from start to finish
-
Ability to work productively alone and as part of a team

Proactive, open to learning and strives for continuous improvement
Nice-to-have:

2+ years prior knowledge of telecommunications and/or satellite communications desired

Technical Writer certifications or training courses an asset
-
Experience working with project and documentation management tools such as Confluence/JIRA and PLM software an asset

Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator an asset
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing general office duties for this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand and/or walk around (including the use of stairs). Other demands include the ability to openly communicate with others by talking, listening, and reading, able to lift light objects (<25lbs), and use standard office equipment such as computer, printer, phone and cell phone. In addition, there is an occasional need to bend, twist or stoop in order to open/close cabinets, reach for files or other standard office type objects.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The office environment is generally quiet and, in a temperature, controlled setting with random adjustments in noise or temperature due to others talking or laughing loudly, unscheduled maintenance repairs to the building or its interior offices or unpredictable situations due to weather or other acts beyond company control. An employee must be willing to work their regularly assigned work schedule for their particular duties and/or job responsibilities and in times of need, be able to work an extended schedule depending on company/department needs, project requirements or customer demands. Work may require some physical effort in the handling of light materials, boxes or equipment. The temperature at client locations can vary from controlled to variations off hot/cold when working, standing or walking in or near the flight-line or maintenance repair center.
