The Town of New Tecumseth is looking for a Fire Prevention Officer to join our New Tecumseth Fire and Rescue team.

The Fire Prevention Officer, reporting to the Deputy Fire Chief, Prevention and Education, conducts fire and life safety inspections and examines fire scenes to prevent loss of life and property. This position is also pivotal in providing public education to the community to promote fire safety awareness.
Responsibilities:
Conduct fire and life safety inspections, as assigned and coordinated by the Deputy Fire Chief, Prevention and Education. Assign inspections to the Paid On Call Fire Inspectors and ensure satisfactory completion.
Schedule coordinate and deliver public education programs including, fire safety seminars, fire extinguisher training, fire station tours and the door-to-door smoke alarm campaign.
Examine fire scenes as required by the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, using NFPA 921 as a guide, to determine cause and origin, assess occupant behaviour and assess efficacy of fire safety resources and protection equipment.
Evaluate, when requested, submitted fire safety plans and forward to the Deputy Fire Chief for approval.
Conduct pre-plans for buildings and submit for approval.
Conduct new building plan reviews for compliance with the Ontario Building Code and other applicable legislation.
Provide technical support and training to fire suppression personnel with respect to the Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code and Origin, Cause and Circumstance Investigations.
Respond to non-emergency calls (such as burn complaints and intermittent smoke or carbon monoxide alarm activations) during regular business hours.
Perform administrative tasks to support maintenance of statistical data and reports.
Qualifications:
Requires the following NFPA qualifications at time of hire:
NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials Awareness
NFPA 1001 & 1002 – Certified Firefighter (or legacied equivalent)
NFPA 1021 Fire Officer I
NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor I
Requires the following NFPA qualifications within a year of hire:
NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector I
NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator
NFPA 1035 Public Educator I
Preferred qualifications:
NFPA 1021 Fire Officer II
NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor II
OBC Fire Protection
OBC General Legal Process for Inspectors
Requires a valid G class driver’s licence, and the ability to submit a clean driver’s abstract upon hire (DZ class would be an asset)
Requires 3-5 years of experience in fire service with at least 2 years in a fire prevention related role.
Experience delivering education programs to the public
Working knowledge of the Fire Protection & Prevention Act, Ontario Fire Code, Ontario Building Code and relevant NFPA standards
Working knowledge of technical aspects for fire alarm, sprinkler and other fire protection systems including a working knowledge of hazardous materials

Salary: $70,452.20 - $88,088.00, plus employer paid benefits and OMERS pension plan
Hours: 35 hours per week, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday
Location: Fire Station 1 (130 Church St. S. in Alliston)
Start Date: July 24, 2023
