Sailcone's Grizzly Bear Lodge is looking for a full time guide/assistant manager for the 2023 season. We offer all-inclusive, guided wildlife viewing trips focussing on Grizzly Bears and marine animals. We are located on Minstrel Island, near Knight Inlet. Access to the lodge is by float plane or boat only from Vancouver Island.
This position is for a guide/naturalist and assistant manager. Candidates should have experience guiding wildlife tours for both bears and whales. It is required that candidates be comfortable operating small to medium sized vessels and have experience working with the public. Candidates will be required to take guests on day trips by boat to various locations to view wildlife. Some of these tours also require going on land and a driving to remote areas by truck, while others are strictly boat based. A good knowledge of local wildlife and the area is important. Guides must be able to conduct all tours safely and educate guests on the wildlife and area. We are a small lodge and we run small numbers on our tours. Guides will often work without assistants. We encourage interactions with our guests and our guides are expected to be available after the tours to answer questions and have a visible presence around the lodge.
The assistant manager side will require various coordinations and schedules around the lodge and the tours. The owner is usually on site, but candidates will be required to oversee operations when the owner/manager is away or has other tasks to deal with. Generally we will try and offer some days off from guiding to deal with these jobs, but as a small operator in a remote setting there will be times that the successful candidate has to guide and manage. Duties will include scheduling tours for guests and guides, confirming transportation and guest schedules (float planes, boats etc.), overseeing stock and food orders, keeping track and performing basic maintenance tasks, coordinating basic operating functions with other staff (drinking water levels, fuel orders, parts etc.). The manager will also interacting with guests frequently answering questions and looking after any issues or needs. They will be expected to be present after tours, be a part of dinner services and be available during the evenings. As a small lodge there will be many different tasks and components.
Candidates are required to have all necessary tickets (SVOP, MEDA3, ROCM, Marine first aid or equivalent).
Candidates must be familiar with and able to follow all marine mammal viewing laws and guidelines as well as all commercial bear viewing laws and best practices.
Commercial Bear Viewing training and Marine Wildlife training is required. It is preferred that candidates have these, but we may be able to arrange training.
Other assets are any food safe courses, any additional firs-aid, tourism training, trade training, firefighting courses
Basic mechanical skills are an asset as well as marine skills. Experience in remote lodges or camps is preferred. Computer and scheduling skills are an asset. Experience in some form of management is preferred.
We offer basic accommodation and all meals are provided free of charge. During the season long shifts may be required. We will train on site prior to the busy season. Vehicle parking on Vancouver Island is provided. Candidates must have transportation to Northern Vancouver Island for pick up by boat.
