Vice Principal - Administration
The Seabird Island Band is a multi-faceted First Nations Band that includes government, business, service and nonprofit services. We work as an integrated team to improve the health, education, and economic opportunities for First Nations people to create thriving First Nations families and communities.
The Vice-Principal: Administration (VPAdmin) is responsible for the administration, leadership, supervision and operation of the administrative needs of Seabird Island Elementary and High Schools.
The VPAdmin provides quality administrative direction in a learning environment that promotes language and reinforces the highly honored values of self-reliance, generosity, honesty, adaptability, and respect for self, others and the environment.
The VPAdmin must fulfill his/her responsibilities with high ethical and moral standards and serve as a positive role model for staff and students.
The VPAdmin must act in the best interests of the students at all times and ensure that all school staff work diligently to create a positive, caring atmosphere that encourages self- discipline and promotes life-long learning.
The VPAdmin works with the Principal to ensure that school staff comply with all academic policies, acts and regulations governing the operation of the school.
The VPAdmin must maintain daily contact with the Principal to report on accomplishments or discuss issues that may require additional administrative, policy or financial support.
Duties and Responsibilities
Administration
Inform and assist in budget development, management and reporting
Manage the recruitment needs of the school, in conjunction with Human Resources, ensuring that the Personnel Policy is applied consistently in all actions concerning the hiring, training, evaluation, employee relations, performance and retention of school staff.
Manage staff deliverables, performance reviews, effectiveness and performance goals
Manage external communications with parents and community, SIB staff and public schools
Contribute to the periodic review of all Seabird Island Community School policies.
Carrying out discipline of students according to established policies and procedures.
Work with the Principal to set the annual school calendar.
Participate in annual strategic planning and other initiatives overseen by the Education Advisory Committee.
Develop and implement effective assessment processes and utilizing the data to inform and adjust administrative practices
Working with the Principal, the Education Advisory Committee and the school cultural committee to develop and implement a Seabird Island Community School Cultural Plan
Reporting and compliance
Oversee and verify accuracy on the completion and submission of nominal roll and 1701s rosters for funding purposes.
Coordinate and oversee data uploads, license renewals etc. pertaining to the My Ed student data management system.
Administer the BC School Act, Independent School Act, and BC Home School Act as they apply to the Seabird Island Schools.
Develop and ensure implementation of the maintenance schedule of school buildings, equipment and buses.
Manage external evaluations or audits of the school
Academic achievement administration
Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the Kindergarten to Grade 12 educational programs of SICS
Manage the tracking of credits, attendance, and high school completion rates.
Co-develop and implement literacy and numeracy educational programs that result in high rates of academic achievement in literacy and numeracy
Co-develop and implement evaluation mechanisms and data gathering to inform and improve upon instructional practices
Ensure timely and regular reporting of student progress to students and parents
Undertake long-term planning for the school Kindergarten to Grade 12 programs
Observe, evaluate and improve the competencies of teachers. Formal written evaluations in November and April of each year, ensuring staff are aware of performance expectations, and competency improvement goals.
Strategic planning
Participate in annual strategic planning and other initiatives overseen by the Education Advisory Committee.
Strategic plan and implementation to increase academic achievement and high school graduation rates.
Develop and implement the school program, under the direction of the Principal and in conjunction with teaching staff, to meet the requirements of the B.C. Ministry of Education and SIB education jurisdictional requirements
Ensure familiarity with Education Jurisdiction and play a lead role in future development of academics and curriculum for SICS
Work with the Principal and Vice-Principal Administration to set the annual school calendar.
Work with the Principal to participate in any external evaluations or audits of the school
Work with senior staff to ensure that all necessary documentation is submitted to the Ministry or Indigenous Services Canada in a timely, professional and accurate manner
Work with the Principal and teachers to plan Professional Development that meets the objectives of the school, the strategic plan, and the needs of teachers in their roles.
Contribute to the periodic review of all Seabird Island Community School policies
Education / Knowledge / Skills / Qualifications
A Master’s Degree in Education Administration and First Nations teaching experience.
2-5 years’ leadership experience in an independent First Nations school.
Ability to be a positive role model for staff and students, and inspire high academic achievement.
Ability to interact effectively with a variety of personality types.
Demonstrated leadership and administrative achievements.
Knowledge of the Stó:lò culture and Halq’eméylem language.
Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
High professional and ethical standards.
A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License.
