Director, Centres for Manufacturing and Energy Innovation

Position Summary

Red Deer Polytechnic is currently seeking a permanent full-time Director, Centres for Manufacturing and Energy Innovation to join our team.

Reporting to the Associate Vice-President, Applied Research, the Director, Centres for Manufacturing and Energy Innovation directs and manages Red Deer Polytechnic’s Centre for Innovation in Manufacturing and Energy Innovation Centre, which supports the institution’s Strategic Transformation Plan and the province’s mandate for post-secondary education as identified in Alberta 2030: Building Skills of Jobs.

Combining strong technical knowledge in research, manufacturing, and engineering with superior networking skills, this role connects external stakeholders with faculty, students, and other researchers to find solutions for industry in our Centres for Innovation in Manufacturing and Energy Innovation.

Position Responsibilities

You will be responsible for, but not limited to the following:

Centers Manufacturing and Energy Innovation Leadership

Leads the operational delivery on RDP’s applied research priorities within the Manufacturing and Energy Centres in order to align with regional industry, provincial priorities and the strengths and identifiable capacity areas of the Institution.
Increases the scale, scope, relevance, efficiency, and impact of RDP’s delivery of applied research outcomes through the Manufacturing and Energy Centres through leadership and engagement of Centre staff and other RDP employees
Develops continuous improvement of process and administration of applied research activities in fulfillment of RDP policy and procedures for financial and operational management of applied research activities within the Manufacturing and Energy Centres
Prepares business cases and leads the development of proposals to secure funding for capacity building, with a range of complexity, duration, and value
Collaborates with internal stakeholders to advance the work of the Manufacturing and Energy Centres and to engage faculty and students in research projects and training opportunities.
Provides leadership to the institution regarding applied research, industry engagement opportunities, technology adoption, entrepreneurship, as it pertains to the Alberta Technology and Innovation Strategy and Canada’s Innovation Challenges

Business Development and Stakeholder Relations

Fosters involvement of industry, PSI’s, and government at regional, provincial, and national levels in applied research activities in the Manufacturing and Energy Centres.
Promotes RDP’s Manufacturing and Energy Centres as important hubs for multi-sectoral partnerships, networking, and interaction linking various partnerships and agencies ensuring the strong performance of these Centres across key indicators
Utilizes networks and relationships to create and deliver a sustainability plan for operations within the Manufacturing and Energy Centres.
Generates revenue through grants, partnerships, and client projects to sustain and grow the applied research occurring in the Manufacturing and Energy Centres, including personnel, operational, and capital requirements
Maintains effective and detailed communications with various levels of Ministries and governments, industry members, advisory committees, agencies and other internal and external partners, as appropriate
Manages relationships with external stakeholders regarding service level capabilities with the Centres, project scope of work, expectation management, and conflict resolution
Markets the Centres through media, promotional events, and education sessions for stakeholders

Team Leadership

Promotes and support respectful and inclusive work & learning spaces
Communicates with and engages employees to deliver high levels of performance and find opportunities for growth and development
Supports, articulates, and advances strategic goals related to employee experience and engagement
Builds and leads teams of technical and business experts who can solve challenges within advanced manufacturing, Industry 5.0, and energy innovation, and complete projects on time and within budget
Develops, reviews, and is accountable for the fluid support structure and processes to ensure the effective and efficient distribution and delegation of work within a dynamic work environment
Conducts personnel recruitment, retention, supervision, coaching, and performance management in compliance with Human Resources policies and procedures, FOIPP, and collective agreements in support of a high performing team
Establishes and maintains a team-based approach among Centre employees and collaborators in exploring and completing innovation projects

Project Leadership

Provides leadership for planning, creating, developing, delivering, and managing research projects associated with the Manufacturing and Energy Centres
Provides leadership for the development of a customized research plan for each client, based on their unique needs and requirements
Brings extensive technical engineering knowledge and experience to deliver project-based outcomes directly to industry partners in a timely manner
Exercises a high level of influence on research activities to support timely, successful outcomes for clients, research funding bodies, and RDP
Develops, oversees, and is accountable for industry standard comprehensive research reports and presentations

Risk and Financial Management

Directs the development and maintenance of appropriate internal controls, responses, monitoring expenditures and assuring compliance with RDP’s policies and procedures.
Accounts for Centres’ funding and fiduciary responsibilities to NSERC and other government granting agencies, industry funders, and RDP, working with direct reports and colleagues to fulfill this responsibility
Develops cost recovery revenue generation strategies and is responsible for implementation
Solves budgetary and financial concerns within the scope of the Centres’ resources
Authorizes and ensures compliance with NSERC reporting requirements
Ensures deliverables are met as outlined in grant agreements
Analyzes budget reports to ensure accuracy and to forecast future expenditures and/or savings and to identify and recommend potential operational changes to improve efficiency and effectiveness of centre operations
Works closely with the Department of Applied Research regarding budgets, contracts, and budget transactions for personnel, operations, and capital equipment. and follows the polytechnic financial systems processes regarding purchase card buying, purchasing requisition creation, seeking quotes, RFP processes, and creating purchase orders

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in Engineering required and must be a member of APEGA in good standing and able to be the Responsible Member for the Permit to Practice
Other combinations of education and experience in project leadership in areas of prototyping and research may be considered
Minimum of 10 years of experience in managing research projects/programs
Minimum of 10 years demonstrated experience in conducting research
Minimum of 10 years of supervisory and leadership experience
Proven track record of applied research projects with various stakeholders that translate to commercialization and meaningful outcomes
Demonstrated experience in commercialization of new products and technology
Demonstrated ability in research design, data analytics, and research program leadership
Entrepreneurial thinking, resourceful
Ability to negotiate responsibilities, expectations, and accountabilities with various stakeholders to ensure outcomes are achieved
Ability to build business relationships based in trust and respect
Ability to manage change and operate nimbly
Demonstrated experience in recruitment, retention, coaching, performance management, and discipline and discharge where necessary
Proven ability to lead and manage research projects in industry or for industry
Ability to build support and coalition for project delivery with direct reports, colleagues, and clients
Excellent administrative, planning, and organizational skills
Proven ability to plan strategically, initiate action, and achieve desired outcomes
Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in Engineering preferred
