As a Lead, Indigenous Cultural Safety (ICS) & Evaluation with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

Be responsible for senior-level support to strategic planning, policy, education and research activities toward advancing Indigenous cultural safety initiatives and leading cultural safety related evaluation and research initiatives within Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH).

Work in close collaboration with the Indigenous Health Directors, Strategic Leads, Project Managers, and Indigenous Cultural Safety (ICS) team, Indigenous community partners, and other internal/external stakeholders to support new and ongoing Indigenous health initiatives based on principles and practices of cultural safety and humility.

Provide leadership in the development, delivery and evaluation of ICS programs and services in VCH.

Contribute and participate in the development and critique of guidelines/policies, systems and instruments to support the achievement and maintenance of Indigenous Cultural Safety throughout the continuum of health services.

Facilitate and contribute to curriculum development for the Indigenous Cultural Safety training to improve the competencies of the VCH workforce and the DEI team.

Collaborate and support the development, implementation and evaluation of Indigenous health program, planning, policy, education and research activities and ensure that the decolonizing and anti-racism lens is applied to the development of all initiatives and programs across the health authority.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience
-
A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Master’s Degree in a related field.

Three (3) to five (5) years’ recent, related experience in a senior-level role in health care; with experience in Indigenous Cultural Safety, training and implementation of special projects, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Minimum of two (2) years working for an Indigenous organization/program that includes interacting and developing relationships with Indigenous People and communities as well as government agencies and ministries along with extensive understanding and knowledge of Indigenous culture and specifically Vancouver Coastal Health region’s First Nations and Metis cultures.

Preference will be given to candidates identifying as Indigenous, including First Nations, Metis, or Inuit.
Knowledge & Abilities

In depth knowledge and understanding of Indigenous Culture and History in BC and Canada.

In depth knowledge of current and future-oriented Indigenous Cultural Safety healthcare issues.

Awareness and skill with Indigenous issues and sensitivities in rural, remote and urban locations.

Applies comprehensive knowledge and skill in educational theory, research, technology and related best practices as well as an understanding of health care disciplines and networking abilities to support enhanced educational practices.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with respect and Cultural Humility, both verbally and in writing with a variety of audiences.

Demonstrated ability to lead, guide and facilitate designated teams, to ensure ICS implementation that optimizes and ensures quality program delivery.

Demonstrated ability to work with Indigenous communities and Elders to build positive and mutually beneficial relationships.

Applies and shares strategic knowledge about Indigenous culture and priorities to build partnerships, understanding and advance quality improvement.

Demonstrated ability in assessing and managing conflict and communication in often cross cultural, emotionally charged, and complex learning environments.

Makes independent decisions using analytical and problem solving skills while remaining calm, alert and high functioning in stressful situations with changing priorities and deadlines.

Maintains a comprehensive knowledge of complex health care operations, and department’s goals and objectives to deliver strategic communications.

Demonstrated knowledge of best practice business methods that advance Indigenous culture, communications, engagement with frontline staff, and online and in-person communications.

Fosters creativity and innovation in strategic planning involving learning and development and in the development of teaching and learning strategies.

Demonstrated ability to lead, problem solve, and utilize team building skills.

Demonstrated ability to be self-directed, work independently and collaboratively in a work environment.

Demonstrated ability to deal with cultural issues sensitively.

Ability to utilize strong interpersonal skills to deal with others effectively. Requires strong analysis, critical thinking and problem solving skills, and the ability to synthesize information from a vast range of sources into practical plans and useful recommendations.

The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check.
